Confidence

X isn’t confident, he says. He doesn’t have enough confidence in himself, isn’t that what they’d say? That he ‘lacks confidence’. But he’s quite right not to be confident, he says, he doesn’t have a lot to be confident about. The Reaper stands over him with his scythe, he can feel his cold breath on the back of his neck. Why aren’t more people worried about this? he asks, he’ll never understand that, when every word is marked by it. You should know, he says. There’s nothing worse than people who are confident for no good reason, who don’t feel the Reaper’s breath on their neck, he says. Except jolly people, he says, they’re even worse than confident people. What’s there to be jolly about? he asks.
