The idle and the industrious

I show X a passage from an old pamphlet for social edification my uncle gave me. Here you go, I say, pointing at it: ‘The idle spread melancholy and can upset the mental equilibrium of the industrious. They must be shown the benefits of useful toil by example.’ Spot on that, I say, are you reading? Look here, where it talks about ‘cases of exceptional intransigence’ where ‘forced labour may be appropriate’. That’s you all over, I say, ‘exceptionally intransigent’! You should be marched off to labour camp, given a pickaxe and boot in the ass, I say. They all agree with me, I say.
