I get up too late
The day is lost
I don’t bless the rooster
I don’t raise my hands to the water
Then it’s dark
and I look into all the spots
on rue St-Denis
I even talk religion
to the other wastrels
who, like me, are after new women
In bed I fall asleep
in the middle of a Psalm
which I am reading
for a magic cure
— Leonard Cohen
I love Leonard Cohen, but have never read his lyrics. I suspected an underlying spirituality to his music. What song is this (and the prior one)?
Thanks,
Hi Christian, these two are not songs but poems from his most recent collection: ‘Book of Longing’.
Well that explains that. Thanks, I’ll check it out.
I feel like I should look into his poetry, being a huge fan of his lyrics. “Suzanne” is a personal favorite… in Nina Simone’s rendition. In fact, I think it used to be a poem before it became a song.
